New Keep Puako Beautiful & South Kohala Reef Alliance Community Events coming to West Hawaii.

This year volunteers collected 4,218 or about 1.5 lbs. of cigarette butts at our cleanups this year. We just shipped them to TerraCycle for up-cycling into consumer products.            5/16/17 HPA Senior Class Cleanup at Hapuna Bech included HPA students, staff, KPB, HSP, Staff volunteers . We surveyed and removed marine debris from the beach and the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail from Hapuna Point to the Hapuna Hotel. Hawaii State Park and staff assisted with coordinating this event. We appreciated their help in keeping us safe and making this event successful!

30 volunteers, 220.5 lbs., 2 miles, 386 cigarette butts, 2037 pieces, 1101 plastics or 54%, and recycled 239 HI5 containers

On 7/15 /17 The South Kohala Coastal Partnership and Ala Kahakai Trail Association shared a table of information on resource conservation, displayed a map the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail in the Puako Area, and participated in the NOAA marine debris monitoring and assessment program on our first site.

Department of Aquatic Resources educational specialists came by with educational materials for volunteers. Water cleaners from Big Island Farms received donated kayaks and orientation from Hawaii Surf & Kayaks. Students from Florida and Hawaii Preparatory Academy, KPB friends and volunteers had a successful cleanup day.

34 volunteers, 102.1 lbs., 2 miles, 634 cigarette butts, 2260 pieces, 1690 plastics or 74%, and recycled 34 hi5 containers.

Announcing a poster contest; Create an educational and awareness poster/flyer to share. Subject “How does oxybenzone in sunscreen impact the health of marine life and coral reefs? What you can do about this in your community?” This 8.5” X 11” educational flyer for handout for laminated sign should be brief, effective, colorful and explain the impact of oxybenzone on marine life and coral reefs. I need assistance for this contest and judges. KPB and Coral Reef Alliance have some of the award prizes. Awards will be presented at the Hapuna Beach World Tourism Day cleanup event on September 27, 2017. Kathleen Clark kclark@kohalacenter.org ,at Kahalu’u Bay Educational Center will give us complete contest details and support materials soon .Sign up or contact kpb@hawaii.rr.com if you can help, have donations for award prizes, or your school or group is interested in participating in this project.

9/27/17 Celebrate World Tourism Day and Get The Drift and Bag It with a beach Cleanup at Hapuna Beach State Recreational Area; Contact kpb@hawaii.rr.com for beach cleanup information. Meet us from 8 AM to 11 AM in the parking lot to sign up and pick up supplies. We provide tally sheets, buckets, gloves, pickers and 5 gals of water. Sign up at kpb@hawaii.rr.com

Coming up

We recycle cigarette butt litter from our cleanups. TerraCycle up-cycles litter into consumer products. Hawaii. Hawaii Institute of Public Health, Keep Puako Beautiful, Hawaii Wildlife Fund and Surfrider Foundation, Kona Kai Ea are sponsoring the new TerraCycle recycling receptacles on the Big Island. Currently on Alii Drive in Kailua- Kona You do not have to smoke to recycle cigarette butts! Look for our new logo. Email tami@hiphi.org for more information on this program.
